Sunday Rundown

What have you been reading this week?

It’s almost Easter and I don’t know how that happened. March simply flew by. I can’t believe that my birthday was 20 days ago. It feels like it was yesterday. I’ve done quite a lot in March but it doesn’t feel like it. I’ve read a few books but not as many as previous months. There’s still a week to go and that includes a long weekend. So, there’s still time to up the number. I’ve got a few audiobooks lined up which I’m pretty excited about. Hopefully, I can get to them this month. I have plenty of books on my April TBR.

Weekly Blog Posts

  • BOOK REVIEW – Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzgerald

I admit that I picked this one up because it looked amazing. At least at first. The books is so beautiful that I had to find out more about it. Then I discovered it was about Hades and Persephone and it was a done deal. I had to see what this feminist retelling would be like. Did it put me off that the author is described as a TikTok sensation? Yes, but I put my prejudices aside and got on with it. Read my review to see if was worth it.

  • BOOK REVIEW – Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick

I was aimlessly browsing the audiobooks on my library’s catalogue the other day when Jennifer Killick’s name caught my eye. I remembered it from reading a children’s short story collection that she’d curated and I was interested to read a full novel by her. It was also short and I needed a quick read. Read my review to see if this was another great middle grade book to add to my collection.

  • FILM REVIEW – The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of The Hunger Games but I was interested enough in seeing this film. Not until it was convenient for me, of course, but interested. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this but it did involve a lot of actors that I love. Would it be worth the watch? Read my review to find out.

Just Read

  • Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzgerald

It took my a long time to finish this one. Not because I wasn’t enjoying it but because I was too busy at work. I can’t listen to audiobooks if I have lots of writing to do, so I had to listen to it on my lunch and commute instead. I think this is a really good retelling and certainly more fun that some of the others I’ve read. I’ll definitely buy her next book.

  • Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick

A quick audiobook that I listened to at work this week. It was a fun and silly read that I’m glad that I found. It was a slightly spooky sci-fi book that had references to Dr Moreau. It’s such a great middle grade book that I would recommend to anyone.

  • Pandora’s Jar by Natalie Haynes

Carrying on my month of mythology retellings by women and about women. I’d listened to Natalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships and really liked it. I was less impressed by Stone Blind but I was still excited to listen to this one. I’m really glad that Natalie Haynes narrated this herself as she’s a fantastic narrator. She brings such fun to this non-fiction collection.

Currently Reading

  • Herc by Phoenicia Rogerson

I should be able to finish this one before the end of the month. I’m so excited to get stuck into this one.

Book Haul

Nothing new this week. I’m so close to buying something new and I’ve got pre-order that should be turning up soon. Still, nothing new which I think is good.

Recently Watched

  • TV:
    • New Girl– I finished the last season and the last episode was super cute. The final few seasons weren’t as much fun but that’s always the case, right? I’m glad that I didn’t keep watching this on TV because I never would have got the end. That’s the good thing about binge watching.
    • RuPaul’s Drag Race: The UK vs The World – I love Tia Kofi, so I had to catch up with this one. It’s not my favourite series of the UK runs but that’s because I don’t know as many of the Queens. It’s still a lot of fun.
