Book Review – Bear by Marian Engel

books, reviews

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Goodreads is an interesting place. I post my reviews on there mostly out of habit these days. It also helps me keep track of which books I’ve read. I don’t often agree with the mass consensus on very popular books so I strongly believe I’m not the right person for the site. Although, I do really enjoy going on there when I read a book I know most people won’t enjoy. I knew Bear by Marian Engel would be the kind of book that caused outrage on the site and I wasn’t disappointed. So many 1-star reviews that ignore so much about the book. Or 1-star reviews that say, I stopped reading after this point. I knew it was coming but it still gives me joy.

Book Review – The Vegetarian by Han Kang

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I have a problem when it comes to buying books. The problem is that I buy more than I could possibly read. So, I end up with a lot of books on my shelves that have been there for years. My latest read is one of those books. I’ve had a copy of it since it won the Booker Internation Prize in 2016. Despite it being a really short read and despite the fact that I’ve only heard positive things, I just never picked it up. Until this month. Not only did I need a V title but I needed some short reads. I decided to listen to this at work this week but would it be worth the wait?

Book Review – Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

So, I’m definitely very late to this party but I feel like I needed to wait. There was so much hype around this that I just couldn’t face reading it until now. I put so much pressure on this novel to be good that it became impossible to even look at it. However, I needed a G title for my August Spell the Month Challenge and now seemed like a great time to bust this one out. I also needed something else to read alongside The Unfortunates because that wasn’t the kind of book that I could take to work to read during my lunch. So, I decided to listen to the audiobook version of this one. It is a decision that had mixed results.
