When I was younger, I didn’t read much American literature. It’s not something we did at school and I guess I just stuck to what I knew. Whatever the reason, I don’t think I’ve read anything by Anne Tyler before. I know that she is one of those writers that everyone recommends but I just haven’t picked anything up. I’ve got plenty of books on my Kindle and bookshelves. I just need to get around to them. Now I’ve read this one, it might actually inspire me to do it.
I went back to work for one whole day last week and it was too much. So, I’m not looking forward to going back on Monday. I’m madly trying to find a way that will allow me to keep up my book-buying habit without having to work. At the moment, the only things I’ve got are either winning the lottery or bank robbery. I’ll keep thinking I guess. Until then, I’ll just keep going on as best I can. Reading as much as possible and getting this blog written on time.
I finally feel as though I’m making my way through my ARC backlog. To the extent that I almost requested some more today. I haven’t yet but I’m sure it won’t be long. The latest one that I’ve finished is a book that I wasn’t sure about. It was one of those that I requested on NetGalley but didn’t expect to get. If I’m honest, I don’t expect to get any of the books that I request. I also always feel really cheeky asking, which is ridiculous. After all, it’s standard practice for publishers to give out free copies and digital copies aren’t exactly going to cost anyone anything. It just goes to show that there isn’t anything that I won’t feel awkward about.
Happy Easter! I hope you’re all enjoying the Easter weekend however you’re celebrating. After a couple of years of lockdown Easters, it’s nice to be able to have a proper Easter celebration. I’m expecting to spend today eating and just having lots of fun with the family. Probably not much reading but, as I’m off work until Thursday, I’m not too concerned about that. I’ll have plenty of time.
Earlier this year, I went a bit mad on NetGalley and requested a lot of ARCs. It didn’t occur to me that I’d get approved for all of them but that’s what happened. So, this month I’m madly trying to get through them all. Most of them are already out but a few are set to be published next month. This one was published this week. It was a great premise but I’ve been burnt by books like this before. Would it live up to its potential?
Sometimes you just get a feeling about a book. That you know it’s going be a new favourite even before you’ve opened it. I felt like that about Lessons in Chemistry. I requested it on NetGalley because it sounded incredible. I pre-ordered a hardback copy before I’d even started reading the ARC. I was so confident that I’d love it enough to want to own a copy. But I’ve been fooled before. Could this possibly be as good as everyone sad? As good as it sounded? We’d have to see.
Statistically, we’re not all going to enjoy every book. There are so many books published per year that you’re bound to come across plenty that sounds great but just aren’t your thing. I don’t really request things from NetGalley very often but I went a bit mad towards the end of last year. There were just so many books that sounded really great. I’m slowly trying to catch up but it’s taking some time. Anyone who has been keeping up with my Sunday Rundowns may well be sick of seeing this book title. So am I. It’s been weeks. Thankfully, I finished it this weekend. I’ve never been happier to put a book down.
I haven’t read a lot this week and I think that had something to do with the fact that I was already ahead with my reviews. I knew that I wasn’t under any pressure to get something read in time because I was already behind. Well, not behind but I had a bit of a backlog. So, I ended up reading a few shorter books that didn’t really deserve a full review. Meaning I’m back with another couple of bite-size reviews.
