Today is my 29th birthday and I’ve barely done anything all day. I went out for a nice meal with my family but didn’t get anything else done. I had plans to tidy and do odd jobs I needed to get done. Instead, I woke up with an agonising back ache and just spent all day avoiding moving if possible. Still, at my age, it’s probably best that I don’t get too excited. I did manage to plan a trip to see Logan this week which I’m very excited about. I’m positive that I’m going to love it but the whole thing will be bittersweet knowing that neither Hugh Jackman or P. Stew will be back again. It’s the end of a bloody era. I fucking amazing era.
- The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker
Okay, I’ve not really got very far with this at the moment because I’m so bloody tired. I fall asleep halfway through chapters. I’m not far from the end though and I’ll be ready to start on my next book soon.
- Amiable with Big Teeth by Claude McKay
Saw a picture of this on the Penguin Books UK Instagram and fell in love with the cover. This is McKay’s final novel which is being published now as the manuscript was only discovered in 2012. McKay was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance and the discovery of this manuscript was an important one. As I’m trying to read a more diverse range of writers this year I figured it made sense to buy this… plus it’s damn beautiful.
- The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Volume 1: Squirrel Power by Ryan North
Squirrel Girl is the kind of superhero that I love to read. The comics are funny, clever and charming. She is the kind of hero that stands out alongside the rest and I love her. I have no other reason to justify buying this book. It’s the most worthwhile purchase I’ve ever made.
- Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli
I also bought this book because of Instagram. I know that this is meant for children but I can’t resist a book that so happily champions great women. This is a collection of stories about some important and strong women throughout history. This is the kind of book that I’m glad exists and wish it would be seen by more children.
Reviewed this baby on Thursday and it’s just as good as I remember. If only we could decide whether it’s better than the original once and for all.
I watched this show relentlessly when it was on the BBC because it’s so silly and mindless. The cons are super easy to work out but it’s a fun enough way to spend time. I mostly watch it when I’m getting ready for work so I don’t give it my full attention anyway.
